They're called 'warm-up gigs', you know for 'honing your craft', very few stand-ups go straight from nothing to 1000 seat theatres like Ricky.

As Scott Hanson said, he's testing out material to see what works and what doesn't. But don't worry, he cracked many jokes about the situation and how people had paid upwards of four pounds to see him, and to the people who knew who he was we couldn't believe our luck.
Alright? 10 past 12. Wednesday.
Uhm...just getting loads of f---ing people calling me all the time about sh-t.
...
Can you let him know that I'm running around like a c--t here sorting sh-t out for ya?
Alright? See ya later.

I'll be more than happy to eat my words on this, but I just can't see Steve's stand-up blossoming into anything remotely resembling a success. Clearly he has his fans, but I just don't think he's got the comic chops necessary to fill thousand-seater venues. I mean, a bit about your parents pretending conversation cause there's a sex scene on the telly, c'mon...

Anyway, we'll see...

I probably shouldnt read all the reviews because I'm clearly going to know exactly what he'll say....but I will and I don't care :D

The Day We Met Mr Merchant

Postby HannahJade » Tue 05 Aug, 2008 11:37 pm

My husband asked, and the rest of you have forgotten but today was the first of our trips to see Steve! (I'll apologise now for the waffling and severe lack of grammar/parapgraphs!!)

I am not going into as much detail as before, don't worry, because I'm knackered, so I'll skip the boring bits!

He had two support people with him, one was good, the other wasn't great but to be honest I just wanted to see Steve so I probabaly didnt enjoy them as much as I might have done another time! It started at 7.45 and Steve came on at about 9 I think, and it was ridiculous but the first thing I thought was actually - he is pretty tall! Haha. Anyway yeah he did his set! I can't go into all the detail about that right now but I will tomorrow! Some stuff sounds similar to other shows obviously, and I was expecting to have heard about most of it but there was loads of new stuff I hadn't heard before, and his visual stuff is just fantastic! He also seemed really relaxed on stage which I wasn't sure if he would be. It actually did take a few minutes to get used to how he actually looks in real life haha (I felt like Karl!!) but yeah, the set was fantastic, lasted about 50minutes which was longer than I thought as well. But like I said, will go into more detail another time!

So yeah we obviously wanted to try and meet him afterwards but I had no idea where he'd come out cos there's loads of exits so we asked about three of the people who worked there and they just fobbed us off and said they didn't know where he'd come out, though they clearly did! So we waited around a bit afterwards, and decided to wander around the back, and eventually we saw three lads gathering and they said to us 'Are you waiting for Merchant?' To which we replied yes, of course! And then we saw the Stage Door sign (the women who worked there clearly knew that!!) so we waited with them and chatted to them, and it turns out one of them had run backstage when Steve finished to give him a script, and Steve took it and was nice about it apparently!

So we waited, only about ten minutes I would reckon, and then he came out :D One of the lads went and shook his hand first and then I went and shook his hand and said hello, and then Binda did! And then the lads chatted to him for a minute, and then he noticed our t-shirts (yes we made tshirts, we are that sad!!) and Binda said ' Do you like our tshirts? and he said Yeah they were very good! Haha and I asked for a picture and Steve said we have got to have priority cos we have tshirts! At which point he put his arms around us (EEK!) and I wasn't sure whether to do the same or not but I did haha. And he read the tshirts (I'll post a pic of them tomorrow!) but he couldnt really see so he was really close trying to read them! Hehe! And then when the guy was taking the picture I said, can you fit him in? To which Steve said 'Alright, don't slag me off!' in SUCH a TYPICAL steve way it made me majorly happy :D And this isn't really in order but I said who we are and Binda said 'We're the ones who met Rufus' and he was like Oh right yeah!' Oh and also completely out of order, but near the start I gave him the cd we had made (we made him a cd of all new music!!) and he said he'd listen to it in the car straight away on the way back!! ARGHHH!! He listened to our cd! (Hopefully!) Anyway the lads got him to sign something and then Binda asked him to sign our tshirts and he signed hers, and tried to sign mine but he couldnt do it properly and he kept trying and I was trying to hold it flat, but then he put his hand under my tshirt ;) and wrote on that, and said 'im not trying to put my hand up your top!!' and i was like no its fine!! haha. so yeah he signed mine too, then he said he had to go cos the car was waiting, but he said something about the pen running on to his hands so its probably on our skin! haha not that we would mind! And then we all sort of said bye and good luck, and then I said, just as he was about to get into the car, for some reason 'Say hi to Rufus for us!' and he said 'Will do!' though he clearly won't but who cares! Haha

And that was pretty much it! Roll on two weeks today :D
He also probably has no doubt in his mind that we are completely insane now!

Oh and once again, if photographic evidence was needed:

Image

Yes he has spilt something on his top but who cares!

Oh and also, Today = best day of my life :D

Edit - Just properly looked at his signature for the first time and he's put Steve Merchant not Stephen which makes me really happy for some silly reason :D

Oh man, reading these stories is wonderful! I love these fandom induced escapades so much! This is great, it makes me faintly giddy.
