Nintendo and Sega have always had great music in their games.
I've found a lot of games now (obviously with exceptions) seem to lack memorable theme tunes and just rely on some generic score in the background, I think it may be that back in the days of 16-bit era they had comparatively such little to really work with to create processable music that they had to make simple tunes that would stand out, and have since become as memorable as the characters/levels of the games.

Everyone loves Sonic.

I really like this rocky remix of the Bond theme tune they used for Goldeneye on the N64;

And all the songs in the F Zero series are always pretty cool and totally fit the style of the game play perfectly.

In response to Barry.

Naturally the music has got much better in recent years, with full orchestras etc. It's just that in the beginning the programmers had to come up with original stuff on very basic chip sets requiring ingenuity and imagination that has yet to be bettered.

anyhow, better post some of my own links since i started this thread:

I definitely agree there was a lot to be said for the music guys had to make themselves back in the day.

I love the music from Crash Bandicoot. It was always perfect for the situation and really added some character to the game and was part of the reason it was my favourite growing up. It was like playing your favourite cartoon that never existed.

This thread nearly brought a tear to my eye. I hate being a grown-up.

Pinball Illusions (Amiga):

GoldenEye (N64):

Caverns:

Cradle:

Absolutely. Another F-Zero:

One particularly awesome piece of music from Masafumi Takada (I think) is the background to the No More Heroes boss fight with Bad Girl. Skip to around 1:30 for the music & fight, though the cutscene is pretty cool too.

I'll add more as I think of em.
M: I really think Chris is what makes the Baby Jesus cry.
B: Seriously. He's taking the room in the inn, and Jesus has to be out in a manger.
M: WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN TO JESUS?! HE'S A BABY!

I do love the various rock or dance remixes of the classic 8/16 bit tunes. Just watched this video and the music alone blew me away.
