Danny Baker on 5 Live

Postby conrad1on » Tue 04 Nov, 2008 6:50 pm

One upshot of the recent Radio 2 nonsense is that I've rediscovered Danny Baker on the radio.

I used to enjoy his show on Talk Radio with Danny Kelly (before they were unceremoniously booted from that station), and I'm pleased to say that even without his usual cohort I found his 5 Live show an entertaining listen.

606 with Danny Baker on BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday 28th October 2008 (unedited):

MP3 format, 51.29 MB, 56 mins 01 s long.

This recording is slightly clipped at both ends, which is a bit annoying, but it doesn't seem like much is missing.

Incidentally, if you're worried that the sound of men talking about football is liable to send you into a coma just to protect your mind from the boredom, I can entirely sympathize. However, Danny's show really only takes football as a starting point, instead focusing on the more esoteric aspects on the periphery of the game, featuring topics such as 'What's the quickest you've ever seen a player get changed?' and the hilariously juvenile 'Players with the funniest names'.

It's also worth remembering that Danny himself was famously sacked from 5 Live for on-air comments in a blaze of publicity not so many years ago, and now seems to have been welcomed back into the fold with open arms, which just goes to show that even the current madness we find ourselves in will have it's own half-life.

I should have known by your avatar - you're clearly a beardless boy.

Do you have a brother called Mike by the way?

This recording is also poorly clipped at both ends, so it looks like it's an endemic problem with how the BBC carves up shows on 5 Live. I'll send them an email about it, but I wouldn't expect things to change any time soon.

Funnily enough Danny was joking on 606 the other week about putting in for Jonathan's radio slot. Looks like he got it, albeit temporarily.

In any event I think this is welcome news.

They've been given their own page, and there's even some new features and stuff, so it looks like they're going to be the regular stand-ins until Jonathan comes back.

I listened to the podcast a couple of times.

Enjoyed it the first time but the second time just seemed to be the same so got bored...quickly. Was nice for 606 to actually be decent, doesnt seem to have any depth to it all just someone calls up, says summat then thats it. Your Call the Scottish version is much better, presented by Jim Traynor who is a bit of a dick but at least he has strong opinions and doesnt hold back if necessary unlike 606
