One thing that I don't think many of us even thought about is that when (leading up to the show) he said wanted to cross the line and not get invited back, he probably got approval to do so solely from NBC. I'd be surprised if he even mentioned it to the HFP as they have nothing to do with the broadcasting regulations. I don't think NBC had any issues with it at all. I didn't even consider what the HPF's reaction to it might have been until the moment of.

I love that Eh, "WAAAAA WAAAA LEAVE RICKY ALONE" MeWinehouse accuses people of having predictable reactions. Delicious.

My house just filled with the sound of thunderous applause at your ability to predict that. Funnily enough the second I saw you posted I knew it would be some smart arsed comment.

The reaction from people that, you know, aren't the usual suspects here, Hollywood stars that were targeted, or press looking for attention, seems to be overtly positive. Twitter absolutely exploded last night in support of Ricky. If you look at the comments on most of the YouTube videos (even the atheist one, oddly enough) or the Gawker articles, especially, you can tell that most people seemed to have thought it was pretty fantastic (well, the word "amazing" has come up more often I believe).

Quite the demo of intellectuals you have there.

All in all, while he may have upset some Hollywood people last night, he increased his profile in America astronomically.

It does help to raise your profile when you host the exact same show on the exact same network two years in a row with more or less the exact same shtick. You're v. insightful.

Wow, why is everybody getting so stressed over this? Really guys, take a step back and think about what you're doing - arguing (not in a light-hearted way, but in a vitriolic way) about the merits, or lack thereof, of somebody's performance at an awards show. Relax, it's so not worth fighting over. We know there are people here who will adamantly defend Ricky, those who will adamantly criticise him, and plenty of people in between. Nobody is going to shift from one camp to the other based on needlessly barbed comments here, so let's all take it down a notch. For a forum centred on three comedy greats, this sure can be depressing reading sometimes.

I thought he did well. To be honest, the jokes weren't really that nasty. If he'd done them about Peter Andre or Gloria Hunneford or something like that, nobody would really give a shit.
"Do you want a sandwich? Here's a sandwich". And then next year "Can I have a sandwich?" "What happened to your brother?" "He died."

Who is Richard Kovitch? Just noticed this tweet:

@RichardKovitch
Editing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant Interview today. Such a class act they approved my 1st cut same day as Ricky hosted the Globes.

I think his opening monologue was pretty funny, after that I can honestly say I didn't laugh at anything he did, I hate his new way of delivering jokes, the same style as "Science". Can someone please ruin his career so he becomes fat and not famous? Then at least he will be funny again, hopefully.

The producers know his humour, they saw what he did last year, very similar humour and he did it again this year. i enjoyed it but they can't pretend they didn't know what to expect, that's why they hired him, last year AND this year.

Just typical fucking american TV exec kneejerk reactions to anything "unsafe".
