oh yeah it was real highbrow stuff.

Everybody who isn't a scientologist thinks scientology is a joke.

@VT_Hokie... fair enough, no offence intended. I'm trying to say that whatever Rick will say, Americans dont really like him nor understand him.
Steve

I'm going to e-mail Richard and tell him I agree.

well I'm an American and I like and understand him ;)

honestly I feel like the biggest problem last night was Hollywood actors taking themselves way too seriously. people are always going to have differing opinions on things like this, but I've read a lot of positive reviews from "regular" Americans.

@VT_Hokie... sorry mate. I have read a lot of reviews in The United Kingdom and in the U.S. Johnny Depp's face when Rick was talking about The Tourist was priceless.

I think most of his jokes were good, but just completely out of place, the Golden Globes are a banal backslapping luvvie-fest, so genuinely criticising people isn't what's needed, if this was the British comedy awards it would work perfectly. He's also pretty relentless, light and shade Rick, light and shade.

light and shade Rick, light and shade.

As I said, the people who are responsible for asking people to host the awards know what he is like, what do they expect. They know that is a risquee comedian that can push boundries of taste. It's like having Richard Dawkins to a speech for a christian party.

I would of paid to see Karl host the awards.

I thought he was funny enough.

Two bits I thought wer a bit stale were "Tom Cruise is gay" and "thank god I'm an atheist". I mean, that Tom Cruise joke is over ten years old!

Well it was only half a Tom Cruise joke if that helps.

There's a reason why Extras was one of the best sitcoms ever written.

In large part because Ricky & Steve were brilliant enough to cast self-aware actors with a sense of humor like Samuel L Jackson, Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller, & Robert DeNiro, rather than self-aggrandizing snots like Robert Downey Jr, Angelina Jolie, Bruce Willis, & Tom Hanks.

Interesting that the powers behind the BAFTAs didn't freak out about the boys mocking them in the series, but the Globes gang have got their panties in a full twist.

Well, some of us Yanks get the jokes, and enjoyed the spectacle very much ;D

Gervais was great. They are just actors. They need to learn how to take a joke.

Eh. It was okay. It's a little annoying the whole way in his blog how he's like 'Oh, I'm going to be SO offensive! They'll NEVER have me back after this! :D', and you just think... please try and make it funny rather than controversial...

What pisses me off is the YouTube/newspaper comments which almost immediately turn into a fucking tedious British Vs America thing, with some cunt Britons banging on about how those tubby Americans just don't get Ricky Gervais, and how their country needs to be taken down a peg anyway, dragging all this fucking irrelevant bullshit into an argument about whether the David Brent fella was funny at an awards gig, and they just generally make all of us Britons look like arrogant little knobheads.

I was writing a lengthy response on why I think he was out of line, but not worth it. I'm an american, I get his jokes, I agree with what Hanson wrote and Gervais was funnier when he was fat.
mbbb: she has two moods-hungry and threatened
mbbb: you can determine her response based on those things

gtpod: It's like Ricky said about Steve, you just command much more respect.

Oh! One good point, as far as I'm aware, is that he didn't fucking plug anything.
