Humphrey the pet hippo kills owner in South Africa

One-tonne pet tragically and violently ends bizarre 'father-son relationship' with farmer Marius Els

David Smith in Johannesburg
guardian.co.uk, Monday 14 November 2011 14.13 GMT

Full-grown hippos are said to kill more people each year than lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhino combined.

A farmer in South Africa has been killed by his pet hippopotamus, after repeated warnings that it was a wild animal that could never be tamed.

Marius Els, 40, an army major, was bitten to death by the 1.2 tonne hippo he christened Humphrey and tried to domesticate on a farm in Free State province.

Els's savaged body was found submerged in the river where, years earlier, the hippo had been rescued from a flood. It grew too big for the people who adopted it and was bought by Els at the age of five months, becoming a pet on his 400-acre farm and learning to swim with humans.

Earlier this year, Els was photographed riding on the five-year-old hippo's back. "Humphrey's like a son to me, he's just like a human," he said. "There's a relationship between me and Humphrey and that's what some people don't understand.

"They think you can only have a relationship with dogs, cats and domestic animals. But I have a relationship with the most dangerous animal in Africa."

But Els's wife, Louise, a pharmacist, expressed misgivings, and the hippo had caused trouble before. South African media reported earlier this year that a 52-year-old man and his seven-year-old grandson spent two hours in a tree after being chased by Humphrey while canoeing on the river that passes through the farm. Els finally tempted the hippo away with an apple while the pair were rescued by paramedics.

Humphrey was also blamed for killing calves belonging to Els's business partner. The animal also frequently broke out of its enclosure and chased golfers at a local golf club.

Els, who also kept giraffe and rhino, claimed the sound of his voice would lure Humphrey back home. He regarded the hippo as "loveable" and a "gentle giant".

Armed with giant canine teeth, hippos are said to kill more people each year than lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhinos combined. They can move at speeds of up to 30mph despite weighing up to three tonne

Was it the same hippo that Karl visited? I guess since I doubt there are many hippos living in a house...

And even if he wasn't aware of the camera, he must have agreed to letting them broadcast it after he found out. So, if it's okay with him, what's the problem? Quoting Gobbler: "I don't get it".

I agree, I was just expressing what I believed others had a problem with.

Very funny last episode. I think the beauty with Karl is you can put him in any situation and he will be (unintentionally) funny, which is promising for more series I suppose.

You know, thinking about it, it didn't seem that as much happened in this series than in the last series - maybe because this series mainly had 45 minutes of build-up to the actual bucket challenge and only showed 10 minutes of him doing the thing he'd gone there to do. Compared to the last series I found some of the bucket moments a tad anti-climactic for some reason.

What's odd is that you can get so much amusement out of watching Karl NOT doing things - (e.g. bottling out of the bungee jump not once, but twice, and doing a shit land-dive) as you can from watching him do the wing-walk or the Glee thing. It's odd because you think 'watching somebody not do things - that's shit television' but somehow with Karl it really really works. I guess cause its more authentic... but given everything we know about comedy, entertainment and television - it seems odd that watching somebody TRYING to get out of doing interesting and exciting things should be so funny.

AIA is really in a league of its own.

They've already said 'no more AIA after season 2'.

I don't get this fascination with 'oh, we must stop after 2 series of everything'. With sitcoms, fair enough, you don't want to carry on doing them until nobody finds them funny anymore, and doing just 12 episodes preserves the freshness and quality forever. But with something like Karl, its more like squandering the funny. Cause you know he could easily do it for another couple of seasons and be funny... I don't know what you could have him do... fuckin' anything involving him being out of his depth and out of the country... and it'd probably still have a lot of entertainment value.

I believe Ricky tweeted that they're doing The Short Way Round with Karl and Warwick.

This is a good point to end it.

You could see Karl getting harder and harder to annoy as the project went on. I would love to see him travel around again on TV, but this time without the intrusion of the terrible twosome.

Sort of true. Lots of stuff Karl did this series I don't think he would have done in the first. E.g. dressing up as a woman, doing the wing-walk. Perhaps they really have broadened his mind.

Agreed. Plus, he laughed and smiled many times through this series. I guess he was a bit more relaxed this time.

Maybe the format needs to change a bit (as DasLankyGogglEye suggested, maybe we should free the K-MAN from his "torturers"...), but I think Karl should make another series. Can't get enough of this man.

They should let Pilkboids host a show he want's to host, the way he wants to host it, rather than promising him a show he's interested in, then effectively ''tripping him up'' at every turn.

You can tell in the first series Karl wanted to try and do an Attenborough, they should just let him get on with it. The hilarity will come from Karl trying to be as professional as possible, but coming off as just...Karl

Instead of thinking up new shows, I suggest we revisit Mr. Pong's idea: "An idiot, Aboard!!".

It's Karl on a boat with a few monkeys 'n that.
