Do you play an instrument / in a band?

Postby ike » Mon 11 May, 2009 4:54 pm

Just wondering, since there seems to be a few musically minded folks on here, if anyone's bothered to learn an instrument...

I've always wanted to play in a band but never had the drive to do much about it. In my life I've owned and started to learn a keyboard when I was about 10, then gave up with that and got a guitar, tried a few times to learn it but can't get on with it.

My next mission: Drums. I've bought a drumkit which I'll pick up on Saturday and hopefully intend to stick to learning these. I've got a couple of friends who play bass and guitar and want me to learn drums so we can start some sort of band, so this time I'll have some incentive.

I play drums. I have a really shoddy kit which I've more than outgrown but I don't have money to buy a new one. Whenever I jam with people at rehearsal rooms I absolutely cream over the mediocre kits they have, mine's that bad. What kit have you ordered ike? Link us up!

My one piece of advice to you would be to learn your rudiments. They're so fucking handy, they're the bread and butter of everything you'll need to do and they'll make you look bloody cool. :P

I play on and off in about 4 bands, which is pretty bloody exciting, but none of them have really got off the ground yet because we're all split up over the country due to uni. Once I'm back in London I'm hoping at least one of them will take off, and then I'll bore all of you with demos and MySpace links and all sorts. :)

i try to play whatever i can.

i started out on bass guitar when i was about 13...played that for two years and got to be ok. never really put any effort into it. im nothing special on bass now, but i could probably still play.

after that i went on to guitar at about 15/16. didnt put any effort into that and for the first two years i only knew about 10 chords and could play only songs i wanted to learn.

around 18 i bought a second hand drum kit...again put no effort into it, practiced all the time for about 6 months and got to be ok on them...still very basic on it though, but can play in the background if someone is playing guitar.

also around 18, when i got the drums i started to put more effort into plaing guitar. learned more chords and actually started learning stuff about it rather than just learning how to play songs.

i think thats the important thing that changed how i looked at instruments. learn how to play the instrument rather learning to play songs

It's basically a starter kit which includes drums/cymbals/sticks/stool and some kind of instructional video and book, came to £230 brand new.

It's a Mapex Tornado, doesn't look too shoddy.

Oh, I forgot to mention, our 'band'.. what there is of it, is called Osmium Guillotine.

i play drums and bass. i got a premier artist series birch rock kit with piaste 2002 cymbals and a squier vintage modified jazz bass. i used to be in a band and we gigged a fair bit. we were an indie band but i hate indy so that wasnt a good start. i too would like to be in another band. i think i started a very similar thread sometime last year...
Its a little radio with headlights, I don't know when you'd need that but...

^ Yeah, I thought I remembered that. Turned out there were a fair few musical folk here.

That kit sounds awesome tom, I'm really jealous now. Where'd you get it / how much did it cost?

I used to play the recorder. I say "play" but after my initial success I actually used to panic over not being able to read the music we graduated to, and then blagged it. Nearly died of shock when my music teacher put me forward to progress to clarinet. I declined before they sussed how shit and out of tune I actually was. Decided it was best to go out on a high. (I was in infants school.)

Really wanted to learn to play the piano, but I can't read music, and have a shoddy memory, so without a piano in the house to practice on regularly there wasn't any point.

Oh well. At least I can claim a reasonable reputation on the ol' woodwind instruments. Even if I did suck. ;)

We should all get together and form a band, "The Pilkipedians". We would be, like, really cool.

I was in a band. But the guitarist died, and the singer had some bizarre mental break down after dumping his girlfriend and coming out as a gay. It just fizzled out after that. I play guitar. I really wanna find a new band.

Also shaky egg ftw.

Edit: Also I'm studying music production.

Is this true or did you just try to come up with the most rock 'n' roll sounding band biography? That's a movie waiting to happen right there.

It's true, but it sounds more rock 'n' roll on paper than it really was. It was all a bit miserable and depressing really.
