And here's us playing Overkill, which I personally think I played a lot better. But the guitarist didn't really know the song (Which is why the bass player has his back to the crowd for a lot of it, showing the guitarist what to play) And we also didn't have anyone who knew the words, so the guy on bass made a half-arsed effort to sing but gave up pretty swiftly.

Pretty good, you're the drummer, no? By the way, was the bassist reading the lyrics off a sheet on the floor? It certainly looked like it. :P

Yeah, but to be honest his singing was a last-minute idea after he'd had a few beers to get the confidence to do it, because it was a jam night down the pub and nobody else really knew Overkill... (the guitarist was pretty much improvising)
We quickly nipped off and printed out the lyrics, but didn't think about enlarging the font enough so he had to squint to read them with the lights in his eyes... But overall I don't think we did too bad considering!

It's a monthly thing, so this time next month I'll have had much more practice on the drums.

Haha, very strange hearing Closer like that. Sounded good though, nice work.

Heh, I really like that acoustic cover of Closer, different innit.

So anyway, to keep ya'll updated with my drumming antics, I've had the drums over a month now, managed to practice at least once a week since I got 'em and am making steady progress. The next 'Jam night' is on Thursday 2nd July so I shall be definitely be giving it another go. I'd only had the drums for 2 weeks before I did the last one (those videos I posted earlier), so I should be much better this time. As long as I don't fuck it all up of course.

Oh. And I now have my own band; http://uk.myspace.com/osmiumguillotine

So... For anyone that's been following my journey of buying/owning/learning drums, I played down the jam night last night for the first time as a full band.
I've still only been playing drums for just over a month so I'm well aware I'm not perfect yet. :P

And we've actually managed to find a singer who can sing now, he had literally come straight from work.

We did two Metallica songs, then a Misfits song as an encore, which was probably the one we did best with the least cock-ups. Unfortunately the batteries on the camera ran out before the last song so the person filming had to change cameras and we only got the last 50 seconds.

For Whom The Bell Tolls (with the 'Imperial March' as an intro)

Enter Sandman

Die Die My Darling (last 50 seconds...)

Erm... That sounded great!

Haha, nah I'm kidding. Really awesome man. Already a lot better than the last vid you posted, I'm actually impressed by how much you've progressed in such a short time. Keep practicing though, it's all about regular practice.

A few boring nitpicks. Really pound your bass drum. I couldn't hear it during the opening of Bell Tolls, which might've just been the recording, but you want to be absolutely hammering it so it's as clear and sharp as possible.

Also, Lars favours cymbal hits with the snare as opposed to the bass drum. He doesn't always play them like that, but he does a lot of the time, so it's not always as simple as just hitting the cymbal on beat 1 of every bar. If you're playing Metallica songs you'll need to remember that and probably check tabs of songs you'll be playing while listening to the song. Much of the Metallica sound is based around this, it's sort of his trademark.

Really impressed though. How long have you owned your kit? You're better than I was at that stage, I know that.

Cheers!
Looking a couple of pages back in this thread, I've had my drums for about a month and a half now (I'd never even sat at a real drum kit before I owned my one!) so it's still pretty early days. Haven't had any lessons or anything, just listened to the songs and then tried to play them as they sound.

Also regarding the bass, I think it is the recording (it was done on a digital camera with those tiny microphones so I was surprised it came out as clear as it did), you can't really hear the bass guitar either unfortunately.

Christ, one of my bandmates has just asked me to "have a glance at" Unholy Confessions by Avenged Sevenfold.

Just had a listen while reading the tab and it's an absolute beast. I might die trying to learn this.

Just had a look/listen at that one - Doesn't look too bad, I find it easier when a song's faster and has a repetitive beat that you can just go for it once you've got it down. Rather than stuff which has many time changes and more complex drum parts (I did look at some Iron Maiden drum tabs and they look pretty damn hard)...

Also I need to get a double-kick bass pedal for some of the songs I wanna learn.
