The former worked alright for Mr Bean and nobody made this much fuss about it.

Well, as you say Mr Bean was the former, whereas Derek doesn't exist yet, so hard to judge really.

As funny as the Derek video is, I think it should stay as just that, a quick little piss about Gervais did way back when for a laugh.
I don't even think there's legs in the character to make a series out of it, but I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.

I'm quite surprised he's even considered making Derek into a full blown series (talk of a movie seems way to premature). For someone who's always banging on about preserving the quality of his ''legacy'', I think Derek seems a bit beneath him. Unless he does something miraculous with it, it just looks like it will be a case of Gervais' latest ''lets have a laugh at this mong'' trick.

It's going to be brilliant.

Ricky is going to use it as an outlet for taking the piss out of idiots, so basically everything he finds crass and annoying will be channelled through Derek.

It just sounds fun, and after Cemetery Junction / The Invention Of Lying I think we could do with a little bit of Ricky in silly mode.

I think...

Eggs-A-frigging-ZACKLY! Derek is not an autistic, downy, mongolicious fucktard, he's a postmodern canvas on which to projectile vomit a Jackson Pollock of the most odious tendencies of the vicious LCM of our broken down modern times. He is a special-ed spastic but with a biting twist, the little twonk is a malicious, egotistical, self-gratifying twat. It's gonna be BRILLIANT social commentary!!! Gervais has quite a bit of a brain and he's using it.

As for drooling helmet-wearers being offended, there's no WAY mentals will get the joke so they'll just see the character as genuine and either identify with or despise him.

I hope it's as good as the video, cos that's one of my favorite things he's done.

After the subtlety and brilliance of The Office and Extras this is pathetic! Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome.Watch it again with your blinkers off . . . Yep, it's awful! Not even well acted never mind funny. I believe that in comedy nearly anything goes as long as it makes you laugh, this doesn't.

She said "don't worry he's up in heaven now with Jesus and granddad Charlie"... he wasn't... I 'adn't buried him, I put him behind the couch...

Sheer brilliance, his mannerisms are spot on. He plays a mong with such aplomb.

Where the hell are you getting this from?
The only time we've seen ''Derek'' in action was a Youtube video in which Gervais pottered around a house and generally acted like a moron. (Not that it wasn't funny)

I think you're reading too deep into things... Wait to see what he does with it first before you declare it an all encompassing work of genius

Who the hell is that? In your world i'm sure that was incredibly witty and well thought out.

When this Derek nonsense fails miserably just remember you were part of the herd who thought it genius. Idiot.
