Just found out that Steve did a gig as part of a charity thing called Stand Up Get Down on Wednesday 18th June.
Before you tell me off for not finding out prior to the event, they didn't announce it so :P
Various reviews online, here are the bits concerning the Smerch:

Opening was Stephen Merchant, who made no mention of his Office and Extras fame, and simply got to work on the routine that he’s quietly been honing over the last few months on the circuit.

He is an instinctively funny man, and genetics has given him the frame to match. His segments about being a freakish 6ft 7in are witty and charming, and brought to life with a skilful comic physicality. He mines the problems of making love to a smaller woman for all they are worth, awkwardly re-enacting the dilemmas with the aid of the microphone stand in a deliberately overextended routine that wavers between testing the audiences’ patience and rewarding them for sticking with it.

More winning self-deprecation comes with sly references to his stinginess, although a routine about fatties is dangerously close to the generic – but saved with a lovely payoff about oversized Y-fronts.

I like this one:

Stephen Merchant, who is appearing so regularly on the circuit that he must surely be plotting comedy world domination, was a soft-spoken formidable opener.

They all said that he was a difficult act to follow.
Can't wait to see him!

I would love to see Steve live. I think he's funnier than Ricky, although both great, i do prefer listening to Steve.

I was in London this weekend and actually checked as thoroughly as I could if Steve was playing anywhere, you never know!

My girlfriend had a job interview on the Saturday so I was mooching around London listening to some XFM shows on my Ipod as I nearly always do! Later in the evening, we went out for a meal and wandered through Piccadilly Circus after, and who did I literally bump into on the street coming the other way? Mr Steve Merchant! I couldn't believe it, I was in awe for a sec like a little kid :o) He was looking intently at a phone or camera or something, and had the most confused look on his face I think I've ever seen.

I was tapping my girlfriend telling her and I turned to show her and there was a mass of people walking around with Steve's head and shoulders towering above everyone, hehe. He is so tall in person. I wanted to go up to him and say "Karl Pilkington has got a head like a f*****g orange!" but I thought better of it!

So I thought to myself before going that it would be great to see Steve live, and I sort of did :o)

Thanks! I told my girlfriend that was the highlight of the weekend, which didn't go down too well as she was assuming that it would be just spending time with her, or when I met her after her interview after being on my own all day :o) hehe.

saw Steve's stand up in London last night and a thoroughly enjoyable night was had by all. No boring observational comedy, just straight chatting about things that have happened to Steve in the past (always going to be good!)

There were a couple of old stories re used which members of this site would know well but they still went down very well and there wasnt anywhere near as much of this happening as i'd expected. He also dealt with drunk unfunny members of the intimate crowd very well!

Saw Steve again at the Putney Walkabout last night. He was amazing again. There was a group of girls sitting in the same seats as last time and he recognised them and he acknowledged there'd be some repeats but also he had some new stuff by tapping his notes he was carrying with him.

There was a good looking South African fella sitting in the front row who Steve immediately pointed out for being so attractive, and said he felt intimidated by him. Then for the rest of the act he intermittently kept hitting on him/flirting with him, it was hilarious.

Some new stuff that was GREAT: Watching 'Atonement' with his parents and having to deal with the awkwardness of seeing "c.unt" on screen, then when the sex scene between McAvoy and Knightly comes on with them going at it against a bookcase, him and his parents pretend it isn't happening and talk about where a good place to get shelves from is. (Also, it struck me as something that might be in The Man From The Pru.)

And another great thing is Steve talked about some presents that his Dad got him (mentioning of course the collected speeches of Winston Churchill). He unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a white t-shirt with a big photo printed on it of his parents (Ron and Elaine) both smiling at the camera, red wine in hand, pinkys extended. Hilarity. Cracked some jokes about it. Then he made mention of antoher present his Dad got him a while ago...Steve pulss out of his bag a hat with metal riveted on the bill and metal on the front with the word INTENSITY. Fuck me. Made some jokes about being in a club and having a girl come up to him who's rushing on drugs and the music and Steve just replies dismissivley "Look at the hat love!"

Also it's a dungeon like venue at Putney Walkie, so Steve ended up sweating his balls off (so did me and my mate) and he ran out of time, but after much bronx cheers from the crowd he did his Globe and Bafta in a club skit, which went down a treat.

I snapped some pics, but I took them with the flash off so they're crap. But you get an idea of the t-shirt and the hat. Plus you can see that good looking South African guy in the background.

Those pics make it look like he was performing in a methodist church hall or a working men's club without tables. Why is a man as succesful as him performing his stand-up in this down market way.
