No Magic For Derek at the NTAs

Having won seven Baftas for The Office and Extras, two Golden Globes, an Emmy and countless British Comedy Awards, Ricky might have expected a National Television Award to be the perfect addition to his enormous award cabinet.

Unfortunately for Ricky, and in spite of a Twitter campaign that featured tweets from celebrities like Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, he did not walk away with the NTA for Best Comedy, which went to hit BBC show Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Mrs Brown’s Boys is a sitcom starring Irish comedian Brendan O’Carroll, in which he drags up as a stereotypical Irish mammy and features a brand of humour not dissimilar to that pilloried by Merchant and Gervais in Extras’ show-within-a-show “When The Whistle Blows”.

The awards are voted for by the general public and in this case they deemed Mrs Brown’s Boys to be the superlative effort.

Derek series two recently completed filming and is due for broadcast on Channel 4 later in the year.
