Ricky Gervais hosting the 2010 Golden Globe Awards

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards was an awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on 17 January 2010.

Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony, an event which had not featured a host since 1995.

Details

The ceremony was broadcast on NBC in the US and Sky Movies Premiere in the UK from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM (PST) and 8:00PM - 11:00 PM (EST) (01:00-04:00 Monday January 18 GMT). The ceremonies were broadcast live for the first time.

Nominations were announced on 15 December 2009. Among films, Up in the Air led with six nominations, followed by Nine with five and Avatar and Inglourious Basterds with four each. Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, and Anna Paquin were each nominated twice, Damon as Best Actor in the comedy category and as Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Bullock as Best Actress in both the comedy and drama categories, Streep competed against herself as Best Actress in the comedy category, and Paquin as Best Actress in a TV Drama Series and as Best Actress in a Television Film or Miniseries.

Television programs receiving multiple nominations included Glee, Dexter, Damages, Mad Men, House, and 30 Rock.

Martin Scorsese was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures.

Ricky Gervais

Gervais kicked off the show with a brief monologue where he poked fun at Steve Carell for stealing his ideas. Carell reacted by miming and saying the words "I'll kill you." Gervais went on to criticize the US version of The Office by saying, "…if you think that particular version has jumped the shark a little bit. That's what some of the forums are saying," followed by a plug for the UK version of The Office. He also made jokes about plastic surgery and his penis as well as jokes aimed at Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Angelina Jolie, and NBC.

Gervais appeared several times throughout the ceremony to introduce presenters. Some of the most notable moments came when Gervais went after Paul McCartney about saving money, hinting at his recent costly divorce to Heather Mills, and Mel Gibson for enjoying alcohol. Gibson was convicted of driving under the influence in 2006. Both McCartney and Gibson took the jokes well. Immediately after the joke, Gibson pretended to slur his words and Gervais indicated on his blog the next day that McCartney, "…came backstage and hugged me and said he loved it."

Quotes

  • I will be making the most of this; I'm not used to these viewing figures - let's face it, nor is NBC.
  • Just looking at all the faces here reminds me of the great work that's been done this year... by cosmetic surgeons. You all look great.
  • I've had a little bit of work done. I've had a penis reduction. Just got the one now.
  • You can be a little child, a little Asian child, with no possessions, no money - but you see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you think, 'Mummy!'
  • Now let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno.
  • One thing that can't be bought is a Golden Globe officially. I'm not going to do this again anyway. If you want to buy one the man to see would be Philip Berk.
  • (On Paul McCartney) We were on the same plane to get here. I was in first and he was behind me in coach. Well, he spent a lot of money last year.
  • One stereotype I hate is that all Irishmen are just drunk, swearing hell raisers. Please welcome Colin Farrell.
  • I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson.
