Flanimals are a series of children's books written by Ricky Gervais. The books are illustrated by Rob Steen and feature many different characters (described as species of animal) that form an imaginary ecosystem. Although Gervais is well known for comedy, he originally went to University College London to study biology, but changed to philosophy.

Flanimals

The first book, Flanimals, was published by Faber and Faber in October 2004.

From www.flanimals.com
"Flanimals were first sighted by Ricky Gervais a long time ago. He drew some rough sketches and made notes about their behaviour. Then, Ricky asked his friend Rob Steen to draw them properly, exactly as they appear in their natural habitat.
The result is two beautiful, informative and compendious volumes, Flanimals and More Flanimals, which are sure to delight, disgust and distress all who read them. There are a few things you need to know about Flanimals. And when you do, I’d keep them to yourself if I were you."

More Flanimals

A second book More Flanimals was published in October 2005. Like Flanimals, the book features around 30 species of animal.

Flanimals: The Story So Far

Flanimals: The Story So Far was published in November 2005. It is an audio book read out by Ricky Gervais.

Amazon.co.uk:
Ricky Gervais has spent a lifetime exploring the finer details of the world of the Flanimals. Now he seeks to answer some of the most important questions about Flanimology in his own words. He deals with such thorny issues as: Where did all the Flanimals come from? What were they doing there? How do you get from a Humpdumbler to a Puddloflaj? What did the Blunging discover in the dark forest? Are Flanimals for Christmas? All this and more in a unique talking book from the bestselling author of 'Flanimals'.

Flanimals Of The Deep

Original sketch by Ricky

A third book Flanimals Of The Deep was published in October 2006.

Amazon.co.uk:
Lurking, deep down below where the other Flanimals are is a whole new land, just waiting to be studied and explored. This is Flanimals of the Deep. Here, the unique, complex and completely mental life form discovered in books one and two just gets even weirder. And more fantastic. So if you feel well enough, read on and prepare to be astounded all over again. As all life started in the water, this book shows the greatest diversity of Flanimal life so far.

Flanimals (TV Series)

ITV has commisioned a six part CGI/claymation series based on the books that will be written and narrated by Ricky Gervais. It is predicted to air by 2008.

Flanimals Movie

A Flanimals feature film is currently in early development stages. The screenplay is being written by The Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman. The movie will be CGI animation produced by Chris Meledandri, who worked on The Simpsons Movie and other CGI movies such as ICE AGE. The Flanimals Movie is currently set for 2011 release. Ricky Gervais has stated that he will be lending his voice to one of the characters.
