Following the success and growing popularity on Xfm, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington decided to reunite to produce a series of twelve podcasts. Episode one of The Ricky Gervais Podcast was released on 5th December 2005 and could be downloaded through the website of the Guardian newspaper, Guardian Unlimited, and was hosted by Positive Internet.

Podcast Series 1 was placed in the Guiness Book of Records for being the most downloaded Podcast of all time (see picture). While being interviewed about the podcast on Richard & Judy (?? January 2006) Stephen Merchant said, "There's something quite nice about being at the forefront of this new technology. The reason we can get into the Guinness Book of Records is because there's no one to compete with. It's like the guy who invented the wheel winning the award for the best wheel." In the same interview, Pilkington said he had quit his job to do the podcasts and in light of it's phenominal success bemoaned the fact that it was free and he was getting any money from it.
