Robert Lindsay Stevenson (born 13 December 1949) is an award-winning English actor who is best known for his television work.

Career

Lindsay first came to prominence as the cockney layabout Jakey Smith in ITV comedy series Get Some In!, and he appeared in the fourth series of the BBC sitcom The Good Life. He was then given the starring role as incompetent revolutionary Wolfie Smith in the BBC sitcom Citizen Smith. He followed this with roles in a number of the BBC Television Shakespeare productions, including Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and as Edmund in King Lear opposite Lord Olivier in 1984. Also, it should be noted that he took part in an obscure Radio 4 show, What Are You Talking About?, in the early 1980s between Television Shakespeare productions, in an attempt to establish a comedy career. Lindsay has become familiar to a new generation of viewers as Ben Harper in the popular BBC sitcom My Family since 2000.

Extras

Lindsay played himself in the sixth episode of the second series of Extras written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. His character was offended that the mother of a sick boy requested that Andy Millman visit her son in the hospital instead of him. Lindsay showed up to the hospital anyways and got angry at the boy when he hadn't seen any of his television work. He even brought videos of his sitcom My Family to show the boy, but the nurse refused to let him in.

Quotes

  • Lindsay: Your kid does not know comedy. Sort it out, now. Citizen Smith, biggest sitcom of the 70’s, come on.
    Joe: I wasn’t born til 1993.
Lindsay: I wasn’t born til 1949 but I know who Queen Victoria is. For God’s sake, is something wrong with your brain?
  • Lindsay: What are you, a critic?
