The "Apple Pip" Reproduction theory is an alternative take on the reproductive habits of humans as told by Karl Pilkington.

Origin

In December 2005, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington began recording a series of podcasts, with Guardian Unlimited. Ricky wasted little time in picking Karl's brain, and during the first episode began questioning his take on the modern world. Amongst other things, Karl mentioned his annoyance at life in London and other crowded cities. Apparently there are too many people in the world. Karl devised an "idea" to solve this problem. In order to stop so many people having babies, Karl believes the best thing to do is to change the way humans reproduce so that they can't just be "having it away" whenever they want to. In Karl's idealistic world, people give birth to new babies as they are dying, so that one life ends and one more begins, ceasing the increase in population. The babies are like pips in apples, remaining inactive during the human's life and only growing once the "parent" passes away.

Response

Ricky instantly claimed the theory was one of the "maddest things [Karl has] ever said". Both Ricky and Steve claimed that the theory was, first of all, impossible. Secondly, it caused more problems than solutions, and thirdly it leaves many questions unanswered: Who puts this system into effect? Who raises the child? How does the pip get there? Karl became frustrated at Ricky and Steve's criticism exclaiming "if you don't want to do it, we wont do it." This theory was mentioned in Karl's first book The World Of Karl Pilkington.
