formerly in-progress transcriptions

hey boys, fantastic work. i'm super impressed with what you've done here. i did get in touch with everyone who had transcriptions in progress and put new notes on their pages as to whether or not they were finishing them. oh- i guess there's 1 left that i didn't hear back from yet but as soon as i do, i'll update his page. just an fyi.

and i'm partial to starting from the beginning to transcribe, but i guess in reality it doesn't matter if they all need doing. Steve is King 09:34, 6 August 2007 (EDT)

I Think We Did It

Looks alright. I think we did it. Good show. A few minor things that I thought could still be addressed.

  • Minor inconsistencies: I tried to fix most of these in the editing process, but some things aren't totally congruent. For example I use "..." for cut offs and pauses whereas others used "-". Quotations also varied. Things like that could be cleaned up if someone is motivated to, not a major issue.
  • Moving the page to /Transcript format. That way when this page is on the transcripts category page, they all look the same. Just my obsessive compulsiveness kicking in though.
  • The 15 November 2003 link to this page is in a 2nd level heading. It looks a bit weird. This page is locked though so I can't change it. I think the heading should be plain text and a link under it.

Any other thoughts or concerns, let's hear 'em. But I think overall we rocked.--Knockinabout 03:44, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

The page looks really nice. Good job on the styling, it is done perfectly.
Also, the page has been moved to its rightful place, but Das pilker's incomplete transcript of the same show is still there. Dunno what we want to do with that. And, I changed the transcript link location and made the track listing headings link to the corresponding transcript headings. Seems like it could be better organized though.
We also might want to consider making a transcript infobox, a la the Xfm Series infoboxes. --Squeek 19:52, 4 August 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the move. Is that a sysop function or can anyone do that (if so, how?).I think Das Pilker's should be deleted, as unfortunate as doing this is, there really is no point in having a redundant transcript, or article for that matter. I like the hyperlinks on the summary page, however I having the transcript link presented like that makes it look like the transcript is just the paragraphs on that page. I'd elect for something (to be put under "Track Listing") like this:
For a full transcript of this episode see 15 November 2003/Transcript.
Minutiae yes, but just my thoughts. Aside that, if anyone has any preference for the next episode to transcribe together, post that soon. Another round might be in order to see if we've streamlined the process after doing this one.--Knockinabout 21:53, 4 August 2007 (EDT)
Alright, I will delete Das pilker's version (even though it seems strange to). Also, it is a sysop function to move pages. Finally, that was the problem I had with my new formatting for the transcript link. I'll see what I can come up with, or possibly just use your idea. --Squeek 23:27, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Initial Stuff

all right boys .... there's my first attempt, first 13 minutes. knockinabout - what do you think? i'm happy to fix it up however it needs to be. i was thinking if the other transcribers already started their formats might be different from mine, which will be a pain. probably we should've decided on a format together ahead of time (whoops). if you didn't start, maybe do it like i did? am i being bossy?  :)

Looks brilliant to me. As far as formatting goes this is fine. Like I mentioned, its ok if everyone does something different because I plan on bringing commonality to them. And yes that does me putting $/#/@ characters for names instead is alright, just as long as the character is uniquely "crtl+F-able". Bender suggested full names for better flow. I'm on the fence because most other transcripts use initials. Then again we could change all that too.--Knockinabout 22:18, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

also i felt like transcriptions need their own page so as to not overwhelm the regular episode page. but i'm open if you disagree.
Steve is King 21:27, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

From what I could tell from other transcription pages, that's how they are set up (at least most that I looked at). I agree with this set up too because transcripts are so long.--Knockinabout 22:18, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

ALSO i tried to use british spelling when i recognized that it called for it. feel free to check my work.  :) i used "learnt" instead of learned, "favourite" instead of favorite ... but there could be some things that i didn't notice i typed american-esq. Steve is King 21:48, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Ditto for me when I add mine--Knockinabout 22:18, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Right i've put mine in now, so that's 26-39, so i've left a gap so that the other's can slot there's in between mine and steveisking's. I used their first names, need to come to a decision on that really. --Bender32 07:37, 2 August 2007 (EDT)

Formatting

I'll throw my 2 cents in on the formatting thing. I think this formatting looks really nice: http://www.pilkipedia.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=19_January_2002/Transcript . Could also put in a template that color-codes the names. I'll put some ideas up in the sandbox for your consideration. -Squeek

This is what I think would be best:
Ricky: XFM 104.9, kicking off there with the Dandy Warhols, Steve.
Steve: Sure.
Ricky: Ricky Gervais Show, with me Steve Merchant.

  • Boldface to distinguish.
  • No all caps (if full names) because its an eye sore.
  • Use full names because ... I just like it that way I guess (but this is probably the thing I care least about).
  • I also like the dividing headings.
  • Page breaks make it compact, I like that (can't think of a non-manual way to do it though).
  • Also I think this page will have to being moved to the /Transcript format of the summary page of this episode.
  • Not quite sold on the colored boxes, beautiful as they are. It just seems a bit excessive. I could be swayed though.

Anyone else have thoughts?--Knockinabout 18:35, 2 August 2007 (EDT)

nice work, everybody. i think

  • no all caps. hurts my eyes.
  • divider headings is good but we need to figure out how to do that/who does it. do we wait until it's all done and then have 1 person made headings for the entire show?
  • i'm also not sold on the need for colored boxes. it is pretty but seems like extra work that isn't necessary. which is almost exactly what KA said.

now a question: i ASSUMED that once transcripts were on the site, the text in them would be included in the list you get when you do a search. but i guess that is not true ... is it that it would become enormously cumbersome to have all that additional text possible when a search was done? but if you can't access the transcribed info when you do a search, i'm honestly not sure what the point of transcribing is. am i making sense? for example if i wanted to know all the times the boys mention "VHS" tapes and i put in "VHS", i get nothing right now. but i transcribed some VHS info. someone illuminate me on this por favor. Steve is King 19:08, 2 August 2007 (EDT)

Steve is King: The reason why "VHS" as a search term doesn't show up with results is that (I think) the search has to be a minimum of x amount of letters, in this case its 3. But, if you search for "VHS tape," it returns results for "vhs" and "tape." Maybe something for Nigel to look into, since it is just a glitch in certain search terms. If you search for... "retro" lets say, it returns results from transcripts.
And, it really will be easy to use the colored transcript layout. I'll convert them into templates and show you the source. It will be simple, trust me. - Squeek
P.S. Why don't my posts get a timestamp added to them? :(
well i've embarrassed myself! sweet. so it IS all there - excellent. i should've tried more things than VHS :{ !
squeek, for a signature with a timestamp, it's 4 tildes (or just hit the 2nd to last icon above). like this: Steve is King 20:10, 2 August 2007 (EDT)  :)
I'm liking the colored layout now that I see the text has a lighter color. The only bit I'm still a little put off by is the border around the name. I know it's minutae, but, anyone else with me on this or is it just me? Also, can we get an "other" category for a color, because I've got movie characters in my bit. Aside that I love everything about the formatting. Once we get the last bit in I'll synch it all up according to Squeek's brill scheme. Should other transcripts be tweaked like this?
The headings will come from 15 November 2003. It's one of the reasons I chose a summarized article to work on initially. I'll spearhead this this task as well, once everything comes in.
Again, I pose the question of moving the page to the /transcript address as a standard. Unless we want to make a new standard. I also posted my bit. The songs aren't formatted well, but I'll take care of that in the master cut.--Knockinabout 21:13, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
Alright, so I took the borders out from the templates. If you liked it better with them, it is easy to put them back in. No worries about that. Also, I have added an "Other" template for you. Here it is:
{{Other|<Name>|<Dialogue>}}

Claire: I have been sober for a whole three minutes now.

Also will add this:
{{Act:Other|<Action>}}

Claire Laughs

As for the already compiled transcriptions, don't worry about it. I know a way to covert them quickly and easily. Leave that to me. --Squeek 23:16, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
Cheers Squeek! I think the templates look marvelous. You seem to know wtf you're doing that's for sure. I hope I'm capable of your level of wiki trickery some day. (Nice to be on the same time frame as you too.)--Knockinabout 23:31, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
Thanks buddy. I've also added this nifty little page: Transcript Style Guide. So I have taken out all of the redundant info from this page. --Squeek 23:46, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
Just converted episode 1.01 to the new style. Check it out: 10 November 2001/Transcript --Squeek 00:05, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
I'm loving it. - KA

Oh Shite

I was afraid of this, but someone had previously begun work on this transcript! 15_November_2003/transcriptIt's not the whole thing though, just the first link (sorry Joy!). It wasn't linked to the summary page so I didn't catch it. I'll try and prevent Das Pilker from spending any more time on it. Hopefully, the work wasn't all in vein and we all learned something from it. Much apologies--Knockinabout 00:32, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

  • lol - no worries. it was good practice for me. x Steve is King 08:27, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

Notes

So, it'll basically just be adding {{ and }} at the ends of each line of dialogue.

Thoughts now? -Squeek

WOW. i have no idea how you did this. i like it. so .. um ... what do we do to get it to do that? Steve is King 20:13, 2 August 2007 (EDT)

New answer: The Transcript Style Guide.

  • OK ... will take me a little time to digest the process but i'm "well impressed". would they say that in england?  :) awesome work squeek! Steve is King 08:27, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
